What are multis and why do bookies love them?

A multi (or accumulator) is a single bet that combines several individual selections. All legs must win for the full payout to be received. The appeal for regular punters is the chance to turn a small stake into a large return. The appeal for bookies is something different entirely.

Why bookies love multis

Every bookmaker market has an overround built into the odds. This is the margin that ensures the bookie profits over time. For a simple two-outcome market, the overround might be around 2.5%. That means for every $100 wagered on that market, the bookie expects roughly $2.50 in profit.

When you add a second leg to a multi, a second overround is added on top. A third leg adds a third. By the time a punter has built a five-leg multi in the hope of a big payout, the bookie's expected profit margin has multiplied across every leg. Multis are one of the most profitable bet types for bookmakers precisely because of this compounding effect.

Why matched bettors are interested

It is all about the promos. Because bookmakers want to encourage casual punters to bet on multis, they offer promotions to make them more appealing. A common structure is a bonus bet refund if exactly one leg of the multi fails.

For example: "Place a 4-leg multi. If exactly one leg loses, get your stake back as a bonus bet."

This type of promo is what matched bettors take advantage of. By selecting the right legs and using the Multi-Matcher to identify the best combinations, it is possible to extract consistent profit from these offers.

Types of multi

The two main types are Head-to-Head (H2H) multis, where all legs are on different games, and Same Game Multis (SGMs), where all legs are within a single event. Each has its own approach and strategy, covered in the Multis course.
