How to place bets in-play
Australian law prohibits bookmakers from offering in-play betting via their websites. Instead, if you want to place a bet once an event starts, you need to use their telephone betting services.
Betfair has a telephone betting option, but there is also a work-around that will allow you to place bets online.
If you have an Australian IP address Betfair will automatically block you from in-play betting. However, if you use a VPN to change your IP address to a country with no in-play prohibitions (e.g. New Zealand or the U.K.) you will be able to place the bet.
Please note that Betfair does not like the use of VPNs. If you have one switched on when you log into your account it is possible that they will lock the account for security reasons. You will then have to phone them to get it unlocked. Turning on the VPN after you log-in is less likely to cause problems.
As far as we know, using a VPN to place in-play bets is not against the law. The law only prohibits bookies from offering in-play betting. It does not make it illegal for punters to place in-play bets. However, we are not legal experts so be aware that if you choose to go down this route you do so at your own risk.
Our VPN of choice is TorGuard. In addition to having a great product they will also give you a 50% discount if you use the code 'Bonusbank' when signing up.
